Astronomy Software
Monday, January 5th, 2009Many people love Astronomy. Some are serious scientists who study it for a living, or who even teach it. Some are enthusiasts who delve into the stars as a hobby. Hobbyists have even made many amazing discoveries. For the longest time telescopes or at least binocular were the tools of choice. Today however, computers make it possible to practice astronomy without them thanks to astronomy software. The list of programs is almost endless.
SETI@Home home is very popular. Launched in May of 1999 this was a project to create a virtual supercomputer, made up of large numbers of Internet connected home computers. SETI, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, scanned through space with a radio telescope seeking intelligent patterns. the data were analyzed with supercomputers. Today, however, it’s up to people’s computers at home and at the office. People at home won’t be having discussions with aliens when they’re found. But people can take pride in being involved in the search for intelligence outside our home planet.
A 3-D screen saver is another type of astronomy software. These programs kick in when a PC is idle, and show various space objects rendered in spectacular 3D computer graphics. These are anything from static images to interactive 3-D views. A search engine like Google can help you locate one of these programs.
Most people don’t know about F.I.T.S. It’s a data standard called flexible image transport system that delivers spatial data and multidimensional arrays. There are a variety of programs that can read and display this type of data. These include free ware FITSview and AVIS to for sale programs like AstroArt and AIP. A web search will find many more. Duke’s physics website lists many more.
There is even software that helps adjust for imperfections in telescope lenses. By comparing the image seen through the telescope with the image displayed in the software, the user can make adjustments to gain the best possible view of these vastly distant objects.
There is a lot more astronomy software out there in the world. Download some and have fun.
